What Does Spirituality Have to do with Depression?
I’m reading The Awakened Brain: The Psychology of Spirituality and Our Search for Meaning at the moment and it made me look back on my life with regards to my spirituality. And you know what I saw?
That my experience with depression occurred when my spiritual life was ‘on hold’. At all other times during my life, I was either involved with religion, exploring more open ways into spirituality, and/or dancing.
Dancing has always been my way to access the Divine so even when I was struggling with which religion suits my attitude to life, I always had dance. But when parenthood, pregnancy, and my health distracted me from my dance, then I had no spiritual protection.
I know there are many elements that fed into depression but I also know that my spiritual search for why I got depression, actually supported my return to health.
And now science agrees – a spiritual life protects mental health!
Just love it!!
